How to prepare PDF file

What is PDF?

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a format from Adobe that enables a document to be distributed on different systems while preserving the layout. When converted to PDF, documents can retain a full range of colour, graphics (vector graphics are not converted to bitmaps due to the PostScript),and high-quality typography within the small file size. PDF format lets you capture, view and send robust information while preserving its highest quality. To view, navigate, browse, and print PDF files use AcrobatReader programme that can be downloaded from Adobe`s website - www.adobe.com.

General rules for PDF creation

  • Save your PDF files as PDF/X, PDF/X-1a or PDF 1.3 (Acrobat 4.0.)
  • Set the bitmap resolution to 300 dpi for colour and greyscale images and 600 dpi for black and white images (if your artwork contains images with small text converted into a bitmap, it is advisable to increase the resolution).
  • Set the compression of bitmaps to JPG with the maximum possible quality.
  • Embed fonts in the file. If this is not possible, outline them.
  • In colour settings, select CMYK colour representation, embed ICC profile and select 'Composite'.
  • If you are not sure what to do with other settings, select 'publication quality' or 'press quality' and maintain all default settings.
